House
Committee Adopts Parenting Plans Legislation
The Michigan House Judiciary Committee this week unanimously voted to refer HB5471 to the full House for consideration. This bill, introduced by Rep. John Moolenaar, encourages divorcing parents with minor children to create "parenting plans" that determine how they will parent their children after the marriage dissolves.
The goal of the legislation is to help protect children during a divorce and to encourage cooperation and a less adversarial custody process for the parents. Michigan Family Forum helped draft this legislation. To read the details of the bill,

Fatherhood
Quote
"Children with strongly committed fathers learn about trust early on.
They learn about trust with their hearts. They learn they’re wanted, that they
have values, that they can afford to be secure and confident and set their
sights high. They get the encouragement they need to keep going through the
rough spots in life. Rough spots that are in every life, in abundance. I learned
all those things from my own father, and I count my blessings."
Legislature Approves Funding for Local Marriage
and Fatherhood Initiatives
The Michigan House and Senate recently passed an appropriations bill for the Family Independence Agency (FIA) that includes funding for local marriage and fatherhood initiatives. The Governor vetoed this funding in the 2003 FIA budget.
The bill is now in a conference committee to iron out differences between the House and Senate versions. To read the details of the bill,
