Marriage
Petition Challenge Dropped
Last week’s Forum Online reported that challenges to the petition signatures in the "Protect Marriage Yes!" ballot initiative could be filed until August 23. "Citizens for a Fair Michigan," a group that opposes the amendment, filed a challenge early last week.
However, Michigan Family Forum has learned that the group has decided to drop the challenge based on review of a random sample of signatures. Attempting to challenge the overwhelming number of signatures (more than 482,000) would also have proved costly, and would have most likely been unsuccessful.
It now appears that Michigan voters will have the final say on whether to amend our state constitution to define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The Secretary of State’s Board of Canvassers is expected to officially certify the signatures and language within the next two weeks. For more information,

Polygamy
Laws Challenged
Despite the rhetoric from many liberal lawyers, politicians, and pundits saying it would never happen, the Supreme Court decision legalizing sodomy (Lawrence v. Texas) has resulted in a challenge to polygamy laws.
Three individuals wanting to live together as husband, wife, and wife have filed a lawsuit in Utah. The trio decided to sue when the local clerk refused to issue another marriage license to the already married man. Their lawyer asked the judge to find the ban on polygamous relationships unconstitutional based on the Lawrence case decided in the Supreme Court last year.
More details on this case are available in the Archives of the Salt Lake City Tribune.
