Michigan Family Forum/Marriage in the News

As Election Day nears, Michigan Family Forum (MFF) has received numerous calls and requests for interviews from the media regarding Proposal 2. The proposal would amend the Michigan constitution to define marriage as the union of a man and a woman.

Executive Director Brad Snavely was the guest on WJR-Detroit’s popular "Mitch Albom Show" on October 20. He participated in a debate with a member of the coalition attempting to defeat Proposal 2, with Albom as the moderator.

Earlier in the week, Snavely interviewed with a TV station in the Lansing area when a group of area clergy announced their opposition to the proposal. To view that news story, click here.

Pornography – Violent Crime Link Studied

Police departments across the nation are beginning to track the relationship between pornography and violent crime. Investigators have documented the correlation between drug and alcohol abuse and crime for quite some time, but an increasing number of police officials are beginning to notice how many violent crime scenes also turn up evidence of pornography.

"Research has shown the link between pornography and violent crime for quite some time," said MFF Executive Director Brad Snavely. "The fact that police are now starting to track this disturbing trend simply adds even more weight to the argument that pornography destroys lives."

Thankfully, Public Act 192 of 2003, a law which restricts the display of obscene materials to help protect children, was recently upheld by a federal judge. Protecting children from pornography’s harmful effects early on is one way to help prevent future addiction and violence.

MFF’s Voters’ Guide Getting Rave Reviews

The MFF office has received many phone calls as individuals statewide seek information about our 2004 Non-Partisan Voters’ Guide. The good news is that this year’s version is available in its entirety online in an easily downloadable format. Promotional materials for spreading the word about the Guide are available at the same site. Click here to access.

Law Enforcement Agencies Using MFF’s Internet Safety Guide

A local Michigan community will soon have MFF’s Internet Safety Guide available to help protect them while online. The city of Frankenmuth is making the Guide available to interested parties.

The Internet Safety Guide was revised earlier this year. It contains information on how to protect your private information, as well as how to protect your children from online predators. Copies are available from the MFF office. Call (517) 374-1171 or email us at: info@michiganfamily.org to request them. The booklet can also be downloaded at our website. Proposal 1 Would Not Reduce Funding for Schools

MFF has fielded many questions about Proposal 1 in the past week. Although we have not taken an official "position" on the issue, we can offer clarification on one of the most common questions.

Contrary to statements from some state officials, there is no indication that passage of Proposal 1 would result in funding reductions for schools. The proposal does not limit the Michigan Lottery’s current programs. In addition, the lottery would still be able to expand in the future, if approved by a vote of the people. Proposal 1’s main goal is to allow the people of the state to have a say in future gambling expansion.
