Bush Speaks Out on Federal Marriage Amendment
President
George W. Bush reiterated his support for a Federal Marriage Amendment
(FMA) in an address to the delegates of the Southern Baptist Convention
(SBC) last week. The delegates were considering a resolution that
would encourage its member churches to investigate the impact
of the homosexual agenda on public schools.
Southern Baptists are practicing compassion by
defending the family and the sacred institution of marriage,"
said President Bush. He thanked Southern Baptists for their charitable
work and said Congress should pass legislation to ensure that
federally-funded religious charities can be open about their faith.

Internet Safety Month
Congress
has designated June as National Internet Safety Month. Michigan
Family Forum, Focus on the Family, and other family policy organizations
are encouraging parents to take the time this month to evaluate
the systems in place to protect their children from online predators
and pornography.
"Michigan Family Forum has an excellent resource
available to help parents develop a comprehensive safety system
for their kids while online," said MFF Executive Director
Brad Snavely. "Our Family Guide to Internet Safety was recently
updated and offers a wealth of information about how to proactively
protect your children."

"Prayer Across America"
Comes to Michigan
In
September, 2004, Rev. Phil Epperson and his wife Vicki set out
on a journey to pray at every capitol building in the United States.
So far, they have been to 38 states, and today they met with a
group of local church leaders on the steps of the Capitol in Lansing.
Michigan Family Forum was pleased to help promote the event.
Those who gathered spent an hour praying several
prayers for our state and nation including wisdom for the leaders
of state government. Rev. Epperson has an excellent website that
highlights his journey and experiences at each state capitol.

Parents Right to Know Act
of 2005
U.S.
Senator Tom Coburn, a practicing physician, has introduced a bill
entitled "Parents Right to Know Act of 2005." This bill
would require that written notification be provided to parents
at least five (5) business days before contraceptive drugs and
prescription devices are distributed to their minor child by "Title
X" clinics. The bill would not affect Title X funding, which
covers many areas beyond distribution of contraceptives.
"In most cases parental consent is required
for the most basic medical treatment," said MFF Executive
Director Brad Snavely. "Yet federally funded health clinics
can dispense contraceptive drugs and devices using Title X funds
and never have to seek parental input. That is just plain wrong
- parents have a right to know." To view highlights of the
legislation, click

Abstinence Education Changes
Teens' Attitudes About Sex
A
federally funded abstinence study concluded attitudes about sex
are changed when students participate in an abstinence-until-marriage
program. The study by Mathematica Policy Research followed more
than 2,300 students and evaluated the first year of their respective
sex education programs.
"The programs led youth to report views more supportive
of abstinence and less supportive of teen sex than would have
been the case had they not had access to the abstinence education
programs," the study concluded. "In addition, the programs
increased perceptions of potential adverse consequences of teen
and non-martial sex. There is also some evidence that the programs
increased expectations to abstain from sex and reduced dating."
