Prayer for the Victims of Hurricane Katrina
Michigan Family Forum joins millions of others in calling for a time of prayer on behalf of the victims of Hurricane Katrina. We know there is power in prayer. Louisiana's Governor, Kathleen Blanco, put it this way:
“I am asking that all of Louisiana take some time...to pray. Pray for the victims and the rescuers. Please pray that God give us all the physical and spiritual strength to work through this crisis and rebuild. Please pray for patience for those anxiously waiting to hear from family members or to get word about their homes. Pray for the safety of our hard-working rescuers and those they are bringing to safety. I know, by praying together...that we can pull together and draw the strength we need; strength, that only God can give us. In my prayers, I will also thank God for the strong and resilient people of this state and how they are working to meet this challenge."
Hoogendyk Drops Out of Governor's Race
State Representative Jack Hoogendyk has announced he is dropping out of the race for the Republican nomination for governor. Rep. Hoogendyk has thrown his support behind Ada businessman Dick DeVos.
Hoogendyk's withdrawal from the race leaves only two announced candidates - DeVos and Republican State Senator Nancy Cassis from Novi. Recent polls have shown that support for Governor Granholm has continued to slide downward, although she still has a lead over candidate DeVos if the election were held today.

Father's Involvement Helps Kids in School
Fathers are being encouraged to take their children to their first day of school this year as part of the Million Father March, which aims to get dads more involved in their kids' education.
The event, being officially recognized in 80 cities, was inspired by fathers in South America who traditionally pick their children up on the last day of the school year to convey their gratitude to educators and administrators. Organizers decided to hold the event at the beginning of the school year as a launching point for an effective educational year between fathers, children and educators.
"There is a wide body of social research that indicates how important the active involvement of a father is to the educational development of his children," said MFF Executive Director Brad Snavely. "Events that encourage dads to get involved will certainly benefit their kids."

Michigan Family Forum Urges Fair Confirmation Process
Michigan Family Forum has joined other state Family Policy Councils in calling for a fair confirmation process for Supreme Court nominee John Roberts. MFF encourages interested individuals to contact Senators Levin and Stabenow to ask for fair treatment of Judge Roberts - including the right to an up or down vote.
"Judge Roberts is a brilliant lawyer and judge who has argued nearly four dozen cases before the Supreme Court," said MFF Executive Director Brad Snavely. "In addition, Roberts' record and years on the D.C. Court of Appeals indicates that he will strictly interpret the Constitution and not legislate from the bench. Judge Roberts deserves a fair up or down vote.
